Environmental sustainability is increasingly taking on a decisive role in the construction, design and renovation of buildings and neighborhoods. The crucial aspect of sustainability lies in the amount of carbon dioxide emissions associated with the production of energy for the construction and use of buildings and all the materials used analyzed in their life cycle.
In this context, the Green Building Council Italia has developed a new rating system for the certification of buildings subject to conservation interventions, called GBC Historic Building®, based on the LEED® system matrix and, in particular, to the LEED® version Italy 2009 New Construction and Restructuring. This rating system, which is a worldwide novelty, certifies the level of sustainability of the recovery and redevelopment of existing buildings with specific requirements that are able to consider the aspects related to the scope of the historical value of the property, as well as the effectiveness of an intervention strategy aimed at conservation and valorisation. The recognition of the testimonial value of a historic building is an integral part of a sustainable design process aimed at safeguarding and enhancing the cultural heritage. Combining the recovery and restoration of historic buildings, with the pursuit of high energy and environmental performance is therefore a current challenge and the object of a truly "integrated" design for the restoration of Palazzo Centi in L'Aquila that involved the different thematic areas of project from the architectural to the specific part of the restoration, to the structural part up to the plant engineering as well as the organization of the building site. To this end, the project objective is the achievement of a level of GOLD certification such as to consider the restoration of Palazzo Centi the first historic building in Italy with this level of environmental performance representing an example of excellence and best practice design and construction of international relevance and attention.
